Y’all, I am not a fan of sage. Period. I have terrible flashbacks to eating meatloaf at my neighbor’s house where she added it to meatloaf. Since then, I never wanted it again. Now, let me give her some credit where it is due! This sweet lady was hands down the epitome of a homemaker and I could only HOPE to be like her one day. She cooked from scratch DAILY, breakfast, lunch, and dinner from her kitchen, hand washed her dishes, brought her husband lunch almost every day and always had a clean house. She was the real deal, y’all.

One of my best food memories from her is when she would make me and my childhood best friend, her daughter, homemade lemonade during the summer. It was cooked on the stove, then iced down. There would be little pockets of warmth still in the glass that I just loved for some reason as a kid! But the experimental sage in her meatloaf (not her normal recipe), was also memorable for me.

I’m fine with sage in a Thanksgiving stuffing recipe (jk…it’s dressing here), where it should be, but I can hardly stomach it in anything else. It can overpower a dish very quickly. This homemade seasoning that I mix up in batches though, it’s a workhorse and my favorite thing to put on roast chicken or a turkey rub! It is my alternative to purchasing Grub Rub. It is definitely not exact with no meat tenderizer, but pretty close. It’s what I use to season my pot roast (coming soon) and is pretty good on a rack of pork ribs as well. If you want an easy seasoning that you can slap on some sheet pan chicken or other poultry dishes quickly and move on about your business, this is a good one!

Why I Love this Substitute for Poultry Seasoning (No Sage!)

In my humble opinion, sometimes a general poultry recipe in general is bland. What can I say…I’m a beef gal. But using my own poultry seasoning blend adds life to my chicken or turkey recipes without overpowering it. Since it is made with pretty generic spices, your leftover chicken can be integrated seamlessly into other dishes, even when they don’t have a similar flavor profile.

  • I can use it on beef, pork, or poultry
  • Mix it up in batches to have on hand
  • It is made from simple ingredients you probably already have in your spice cabinet or can quickly get at your local grocery store
  • It’s sweet and savory flavor is the perfect combination for your chicken or turkey dishes
  • It’s my go to when I need to just get supper going quickly and on the table
  • You don’t have to follow a fancy recipe with 15 ingredients just to make your chicken taste good
  • Your leftover chicken can be integrated seamlessly into other dishes due to the general spices used
  • This is my best bet for my kids loving supper, preferably on chicken legs
  • It’s MSG Free

Ingredients Needed in Substitute for Poultry Seasoning with No Sage

  • Brown Sugar
  • Onion Powder

  • Paprika
  • Dried Mustard
  • Lawry’s Seasoned Salt
  • Salt
  • Black Pepper

If you look in my spice cabinet, you will see that some or organic, some are not. I have some preblended seasonings, but mostly a lot of individual items. We are still on an ongoing mission to rid our kitchen of ingredients that aren’t great for you. It’s really hard, I know. The best way I have found to do this is to home make a spice blend yourself. Disclaimer…this recipe obviously has sugar in it which will not be on your skinny road map…but I figure it’s not silica aka sand…so I am compromising right? Disclaimer…I am not a nutritionist, biologist, or the epitome of health and do not give medical advice. I am only telling you what I do in my personal kitchen.

If I am buying a dried herb or seasoning, I try to buy it in the larger container. It is way cheaper to do so in the long run, and seasonings last a really long time. Even if their flavor weakens, you can still add more and it’s usually going to be safe to eat. If its key ingredients that you use in a lot of recipes, I’d go for the bigger container. Account for your own storage and needs and make your spice cabinet work for you and your family.

I will likely nix the Lawry’s seasoned salt when I make the next batch and try replacing it with some turmeric and additional salt. The more I can cut down on the grocery list items, the better.

Instructions for Poultry Seasoning with No Sage

Short version…mix your ingredients together thoroughly and season your meat as you desire. Put leftover seasoning in an airtight container for storage. Done.

Really you can be done, but you know I’m not done talking…especially about anything in the kitchen, my happy place.

You might find that you like more salt, or it has too much salt. I don’t a strong peppery flavor and have a pretty minimal amount of ground pepper in this blend. You might love it and want more. You might also want to add a dried blend of herbs or add in a basic blend of parsley. Try it out as is, then adjust for your families’ preferences.

Storage of Seasoning Blend

I make up double, triple, or quadruple batches of this stuff all at once so I don’t have to mix it up every time I go to season chicken, and that is often. Do a small batch first and see what you think!

When I make my seasoning mix batches, I store them in a glass mason jar or other glass jar paired with an airtight lid. This recipe does contain brown sugar and you know what happens if that is not stored airtight. It gets hard and clumpy. I do go through this so fast that clumps typically aren’t a concern of mine. But again, try a small batch first, then go from there.

Recipes to Try It Out

Now to try it out! This homemade poultry seasoning recipe will be a great addition to your spice cabinet and a spice mix that you will use over and over again. It’s just a super simple recipe and something great to have on hand when you need a no brainer meal.
